unplugged. superstorm sandy gave life to a new set of scams. find out how to protect yourself. and, why the creator of star wars is giving "new hope" to education. first business starts now. you're watching first business: financial news, analysis, and today's investment ideas. good morning everybody. i'm angela miles. it's november 2nd, and it's jobs friday. it may or may not be deal-breaker for voters, but tensions are high over the jobs numbers due out today. it's anticipated 125,000 jobs were added in october, and the unemployment rate edged up to 7.9% from 7.8%. in the latest numbers on jobs, adp reports 158,000 jobs were added to payrolls last month, while the goverment reports claims for unemployment benefits last week fell by 9,000 to 363,000. stocks surged ahead of today's jobs numbers. the dow rallied 137 points, the nasdaq up 43, and the s&p popped 16 pts. gold dropped $4 and oil inched up to nearly $87. tim mulholland of china america capital joins us now from the trading floor of cme group. good morning, good to have you on the show this morning on this jobs friday. > > go

president barack obama will travel to new jersey to survey the damage left behind by hurricane sandy. he canceled his campaign appearances for a third straight day. he visited the red cross headquarters and today he will tour with chris christie and he is one of the most prominent supporters and he has repeatedly praised president barack obama's response to sandy. >>> there are three events in the battle ground state of florida. he turned what happened as a campaign event into a storm relief effort. people were encouraged to bring relief supplies and mitt romney helped to bag them up for shipping. >>> and a jump in gas prices. at 44 temperature 5 we will -- 4:45 we will hear what they have to say now. >>> they approve a development plan that will force 150 people to look for new homes. it is home to people living on their boats or on rvs. tenants knew the property was for sale and there are other housing options for sale. >> there are 22 areas that have vacancy. >> they plan to develop 444 units on the site. residents will have to move by the end of the year but no timetable has been set

storm sandy. searchers have found the bodies of two boys swept out of their mother's arms on monday. now the family lost electricity at their home so the mother tried to drive to a relative's house. but her car was soon trapped by the raging waters. well they got out of the car, she started banging on doors but no one would help. that is when she lost hold of her two and four-year-old sons. >> it's a horrible story. you can't imagine a grief a parent would feel having the loss of their children. >> the mother survived. she was clinging to a post on a porch. the big storm has killed at least 37 people in the new york still area. all along the east coast 4.5 million homes and businesses still have no power this morning. and that is making the crisis even worse at the gas pumps. the outages forced a lot of gas stations to close while it's also disrupting the flow of fuel from refineries to the gas station that are open and the wait of some of the gas stations two hours long. >>> right now it looks like wall street is responding favorably to this mornings monthly jobs report for october. rel

morning commute. >>> and the aftermath of sandy, we're live in the east coast on the obstacles people are now facing. ñw >>> now to our continuing coverage of super storm sandy, we are getting pictures of the extent of the damage on the jersey shore. this is seaside heights. the olympic ocean swept over the barrier island tearing apart homes and leaving behind tons of sand. crews are now working to cap hundreds of ruptured lines hoping to avoid another disaster. the number of power outages has been cut in half but tonight more than 100 million customers remain without power in the east toll. the death toll has now climbed to 90. the road to recovery is just beginning for some. craig boswell has the latest. >> reporter: about a million people still in new jersey without power and the temperatures getting very, very cold. but one of the roads to recovery one of those steps down that road is the fact that roads are opening into atlantic city for the first time since this storm hit. now families are getting into this area to see where they need to start. what they need to do to recover f

, and good morning, everyone. president obama is just a minute away from making an address on hurricane sandy. here is the latest. look at this storm. the center is about two hundred 5 miles east of atlantic city, new jersey, about 260 miles south southeast of new york city. we understand the sustained wind is about 90 miles per hour. it is moving north northwest at 18 m.p.h. and storms are expected from virginia to massachusetts. it is a huge and brought strong with a very low pressure system that is combining to coke and make this a really intense storm. the result of all of this is you have a lot of closures along the east coast, including wall street which is completely shut down, no trading of any kind on the markets. it looks like that will be true as well for tomorrow. because of this, there are a number of u.s. companies that are postponing their quarterly reports. the last time the stock exchange was closed down this way was september 11, 2001, and last closed for a weather-related event back in 1985 for hurricane gloria. it is expected that it will be closed tomorrow as well, the ne

. >>> two more planes are joining the relief effort to help victims of superstorm sandy. ktvu's ken pritchett joins us live with how they will help. ken? >> reporter: the air force will do what it does best and that is move an incredible amount of equipment in a matter of hours. >> the large cargo planes that make the effort possible but it is the men and women who will do the real work. >> we have active duty, reserve, and we have family members. >> reporter: he says this c-17 plane is just one of two launched today at 2:00 a.m. the largest plane, the c5 was loaded up with equipment and 30 personnel to help. at march air force base, they will join planes that will be loaded up with 600 tons of supplies to support relief efforts on the east coast. including 60 vehicles from southern california edison. >> they will move equipment and personnel to new york that will allow us to turn the light switch on for the east coast. >> reporter: some or all of these planes were scheduled to arrive on the east coast today but we haven't received a confirmation that they have arrived. the mission
